Cytotec (Misoprostol) is a potent drug that prevents ulcers caused by NSAIDs consumption e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac. It also reduces severe ulcer complications like bleeding, especially when a person is undergoing treatment involving NSAIDs consumption. Such persons might be prone to ulcers, are elderly, or suffer a concomitant illness.

Misoprostol also prevents intestinal bleeding after surgery. It reduces the level of acid in the stomach during the period of recovery. A combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol offers a safe means of terminating a pregnancy.

Dosage and Treatment Duration

Patients must read the medicine leaflet carefully before commencing therapy. If the instructions weren't clear enough, consult a doctor or a pharmacist. A doctor will prescribe a suitable dose based on your medical condition. Therefore, avoid reducing or increasing the dosage.

This medicine shouldn’t be shared with another person even if the same symptoms show up in both patients.

Adults should consume 200 mcg per day divided into 4 doses to reduce the incidence of stomach ulcers caused by NSAIDs. Last doses must be ingested at night and with dinner to prevent or reduce the occurrence of diarrhea. However, if your system can’t tolerate the dosage, the physician should reduce it to 100 mcg per day.

For first trimester induced abortion, a doctor will administer Mifepristone followed by 800 mcg Misoprostol vaginally. It can also be placed under the tongue every 3 hours to dissolve into the blood.

For inducing labor and cervical ripening, an OB-GYN can administer 25 mcg through the vagina every three to six hours. They can also administer 50 mcg every six hours.

To manage postpartum bleeding when there’s no oxytocin, an OB-GYN can administer 800 mcg sublingually or 600 mcg orally after delivery.

Precautions

Adhere to these instructions before ingesting Cytotec pills:

  • Inform a physician if you’ve experienced:
    • Dehydration
    • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
    • Heart conditions
    • Allergies
  • Don’t smoke or consume alcoholic beverages when ingesting Cytotec. It can make the intestines bleed.
  • Female patients who might become pregnant should confirm they aren’t pregnant before ingesting Cytotec. The treatment should commence on day two or three of your menstrual period.
  • This drug can lead to congenital disabilities, so inform a physician if your pregnancy test is positive.
  • Female patients should utilize an authentic birth control pill for a minimum of one month before consuming Misoprostol. It will prevent them from getting pregnant during therapy. They should also use the birth control pill for another one month after completion of treatment.
  • This medication may pass into breast milk. Consult a doctor before breastfeeding while ingesting Cytotec.
  • If using Misoprostol pills for abortion, follow the doctor’s instructions to prevent incomplete evacuation.
  • Patients who use Misoprostol and Mifepristone may experience vaginal bleeding. Contact a doctor immediately if it becomes severe or you experience a fainting spell and fever.
  • Don’t miss any scheduled hospital visits so the physician can monitor your progress.

Side Effects

Your physician prescribed Cytotec because they believe the benefits are more than the risks. However, most patients don’t experience severe side effects.

Common Cytotec side effects are:

  • Heartburn
  • Flatulence
  • Stomach ache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Uterine bleeding

Diarrhea results in a loss of body minerals and water. To avoid dehydration, consume more fluid. Also, inform a physician if you experience the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Arrhythmia
  • Dry skin
  • Reduction in urine quantity
  • Profuse sweating
  • Mood swings

Cytotec may also result in serious side effects:

  • Irregular menstruation
  • Severe uterine bleeding
  • Loose stools
  • Cramps

Contact a physician when you notice any of the side effects mentioned above. An allergy may trigger symptoms such as:

  • Tingling sensation
  • Hives
  • Gasping

Missed Doses

If you forget to take a dosage, take it immediately after you remember. But if it’s close to the time for another dose, don’t consume it. Avoid ingesting double doses of Cytotec.

Overdose

Although scientists haven’t ascertained a harmful Cytotec dosage in humans, if a patient consumes above the normal dosage, contact a doctor immediately.

In an experiment, animals were administered 1600 mcg per day. However, they experienced gastrointestinal discomfort. The toxicity effects observed include the following:

  • Death
  • Gastrointestinal sores
  • Diarrhea
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty in breathing

Clinical symptoms of overdose in humans include:

  • Bronchospasm
  • Low blood pressure
  • Fever
  • Stomach pain
  • Sedation
  • Convulsion

Drug Interactions

Cytotec interacts with these drugs:

  • Oxytocin
  • Magnesium oxide
  • Topical dinoprostone
  • Magnesium carbonate
  • Quinapril
  • Sodium bicarbonate

When Cytotec interacts with other medications, it alters its mode of action and efficacy. It could also increase the patient’s risk of developing side effects. This article doesn’t contain the complete list of medications that might interact with Misoprostol. However, ensure you tell the physician about any medications you’re consuming, including supplements and herbs.
