Patients with type-2 diabetes that is inadequately controlled with diet and exercise can use Glucophage as a stand-alone treatment (monotherapy) or in combination with other diabetes drugs. Available in tablet form, the medication contains metformin, an active ingredient, also known as its generic name. The pills are of two dosage types: 500 mg and 850 mg.
Apart from controlling insulin resistance associated with obesity or other related conditions, Glucophage is also used to induce ovulation in weight loss-driven women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
The medicine is taken orally with water. Glucophage's dosage and schedule vary based on the patient's diabetic condition and response to treatment. Typically, the starting dose is metformin 500 mg once daily with meals, increasing gradually if needed. Patients with renal impairment should take a lower dosage.
Take metformin 500 mg tablet daily along with meals (except stated otherwise) when using the drug for ovulation induction. It is not recommended to take Glucophage for more than 12 consecutive days. When in use, you may experience hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), which implies the need to consume fast-acting carbohydrates.
However, the symptoms of hypoglycaemia are easily treated and controlled through dietary modifications and changes in mealtimes, glucose levels, or physical activities. Oral intake requires swallowing the pill whole without chewing it. The prescription for metformin medication often goes along with vitamin B12. If using the latter, ensure that it is in the right dosage.
The above-discussed conditions are likely to cause specific side effects associated with Glucophage. Dizziness, headaches, and light-headedness are the most common symptoms a patient may have. Hyperglycaemia is commonly responsible for such ailments. At this point, drug usage and sugary food and beverages have pushed the sugar level high.
An adjustment to the dose will relieve this problem. Minor gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea and diarrhoea, may occur. The best way to combat these conditions is to take Glucophage alongside meals. Immediately seek medical assistance if you notice swelling of your face, throat, tongue and lips; you experience difficulty breathing, or your skin is ridden with hives.
Before using Glucophage, inform your doctor if you drink alcohol excessively or have liver or kidney disease, a history of heart attack or stroke, a history of lactic acidosis (a rare, but serious, condition that results in an accumulation of lactic acid in the blood), or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Glucophage metformin is not recommended for people with type-1 diabetes as studies have shown that they tend to experience complications in specific areas of their bodies over time. Affected parts could include the cardiovascular or nervous system, kidneys, and eyes. It shouldn't also be used in the event of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Notify your GP if you are on other diabetic medications before ingesting a metformin tablet. If there is an imminent scan or surgery scheduled, suspend Glucophage use some days prior to the appointment. Avoid alcohol consumption for the same reasons. If you are a breastfeeding mother, the medication is not recommended as it is passed on to the baby in breastmilk and could have harmful effects.
If you are currently taking prescription, over-the-counter, supplements, or herbal products, let your doctor know, as Glucophage may interact with them. Metoprolol, propranolol, and timolol can all affect your heart rate. Monitor your blood sugar levels while taking this medicine. Seek medical advice before stopping or changing your drugs.
As with most medications, several precautions need to be taken into consideration before starting to take Glucophage. Consult with your doctor to see if the drug is the right treatment for you. After each intake, ensure that you store the medication in a safe place, out of reach of children and pets. For the best possible treatment, make sure you don't alter the dosage without your doctor's approval.
